Treasurer's Letter

We've all been constantly inundated with reports on our industry and our nation so I won't detail much on that front.  From what I've seen, land work continues to be centered around small M&A related projects, due diligence and the like. New leasing and drilling have slowed significantly in 2020. However, it seems like there has been a small uptick in acquisitions recently from companies’ divestitures and smaller shops scooping up non-op interests for value.  Most of our events have been postponed for obvious reasons, except the Field Landman Seminar and Social this past weekend and the hopefully upcoming Christmas party on 12/7.  These are a welcome break from the little interaction we've had as an organization lately.

In the face of political and economic uncertainty, we're having to face new challenges week on week. But let me encourage you with a favorite folkish (but I believe appropriately spirited) tale for 2020.

A grandfather is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The grandfather simply replied, “The one you feed.”

My takeaway from that story is simple.  Find reasons to be positive and count your blessings because positivity breeds success.  Just because we're not meeting in person as much doesn't mean you can't reach out to colleagues and friends and check in on them or ask for advice.   As an organization we're here for each other, so use OCAPL as a tool to help.  Have a wonderful fall and holiday season and we hope to see you soon!

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
